I woke up an hour before my alarm went off to use the bathroom. I obviously washed my hands because I'm not an animal. When my alarm finally goes off and I go to brush my teeth, the water is still in the sink. Well, this is ridiculous.
So that weekend, I pour the recommended amount of Liquid Plumber down the drain, waited 20 minutes and rinsed it but the water just sat there. Now I'm truly annoyed. The first thing I think of is Anthony Sullivan and that funky pipe cleaner that you spin and it pulls out the hair and gunk that is clogging your drain. 'What was that called again? Do they still exist or are they gone like Billy Mayes? Can I buy one at the store or do I actually have to order it?' I add a vague description of it to my shopping list.
My boyfriend and I go grocery shopping on Friday evenings that way I don't have to wake up early on Saturday morning and go alone and he gets a say in what we buy. Even though I have this "pipe cleaner thingy" on my list, we walk right past the plumbing department at the store and have to double back. Anthony Sullivan is not there. Crap. I scan the aisle for something similar. I find a black barbed piece of plastic that claims to do the same and it's only two bucks so we'll give it a try. While we're waiting in line, I let my boyfriend know that this is going to be disgusting and is therefore his job. He informs me that he's well aware of this.
When we get home, my boyfriend goes into the bathroom to get the job done. The directions say to push down and twist and then pull this contraption to remove the clog. I figure that this will be a pain because the pipe in our sink turns after about two inches and those two inches were clearly not the problem. While I'm putting away groceries, my boyfriend calls me into the bathroom. The snake didn't do what it was supposed to. He twisted it and pulled it like it was a Bop-It, but nothing came out. Damn. He tried again. Still nothing. We turned on the faucet and the water still went down at a rapid pace. This is awesome! The snake didn't do what it said it would, but it did what it was supposed to!
As I kept turning the faucet on and off and marveled at how quickly the water went down, I realized that I was excited about water going down a pipe. I'm growing up and this is what excites me now; not free drinks or an amazing party -just being able to maintain a house without calling my dad. I can't decide whether I'm proud or depressed about this, but these moments are happening more and more often.
